The Defense Finances Account System is the largest finance and accounting operation in the world. The DFAS is an agency of the United States Department of Defense which was started under the direction of Secretary of Defense. This agency was started back in 1991 with the mandate of providing financial and accounting services to the civil and military members of the defense department.

This is the agency that pays all the military and civilian personnel, annuitants, retirees and many more. The DFAS was started for two reasons; one to reduce the cost of Defense department finance and accounting operation and the other reason was to strengthen the financial management. In 2003, the agency was chosen to be among the four governmental entities to provide payroll services to the U.S government. The agency was selected by the Office of Personnel Management.
